My daily dal

I picked up this recipe while I was doing my yoga Teacher Training Course (TTC) with Sampoorna Yoga in Goa, India. Deniz, the chef at Fatima’s Restaurant made it for me. Ever since I tried it, I ate it almost every afternoon. I brought the recipe home and whenever somebody comes over for dinner, this will be on the menu.
Ingredients (serves 2)

  • 100 gr red lentils
  • bit of turmeric
  • salt
  • asafoetida (hing)
  • cumin seeds
  • dried chili’s
  • 1 union (chopped up)

Wash the lentils. Put 4 decilitre water in a medium pan and add the lentils. As soon as it starts boiling take the foam of the water. Add a little bit (half a tea spoon) turmeric and an pinch of salt (to taste). Put the lid half on (I use to put a wooden spatula between the pan and the lid) and bring down the gas until the water is just boiling. Let it cook for about 40 minutes.

Take a frying pan, add some (coconut) oil or ghee and let it get real hot. Add the asafoetida, the cumin seeds and the chili’s. When the chili’s start to get dark you add the union. As soon as the union starts to get dark, you add everything to the dal.
