Chest opening Yoga sequence

Chest opening yoga sequence (video)

I created a chest opening yoga sequence (see video) for you. Opening your chest in yoga is one of the hardest things to do. It requires often a lot of back bends and a lot of people are not a big fan of back bends. There is an emotional explanation for it. Back bends are heart openers. We ‘free’ a lot of emotions when we’re bending backwards. Not everybody is ready for that. That is the energetic reason why in Ashtanga you first do all those forward bends in the primary series before you start doing back bends in the intermediate series. We first have to be able to surrender (bending forward) to life, before we can actually open our hearts.

But a ‘closed chest’ isn’t only an emotional ‘thing’. There is also a physical reason we are closing our hearts. Look at your work. We sit behind the computer for a long time. How does your posture look like? And when you’re at home with your laptop or tablet on your lap? And when you’re busy on your phone? All chest closers.

Flat neck syndrome

In the United States there is a lot of research done on children. Doctors have noticed that the normal curve we have in our neck is disappearing in young children. Why? Because we only bend forward. Your head weighs about 4 till 5 kilo. That is the weight of a bowling ball. When you keep your head forward all the time – what you are doing behind your computer, laptop and on your phone – you have all this weight hanging on the muscles on the back of your neck, but also on your vertebrae, because these muscles attach to your vertebrae. You’re making the muscles on the back of your neck longer and at the same time on the front shorter. Children, who haven’t got a fully grown skeleton, are pulling the curve out of their spine by having their head forward all the time. The result? Neck pain, shoulder pain and headaches. To compensate for all this forward bending we have to do some chest openers as well. This chest opening yoga sequence will help you to open your chest, without doing too crazy back bends.
