howler monkey

The loudest animal

It’s five in the morning as my alarm goes off. The whole hostel is asleep, except for Mark, Marieke and me. Mark discovered a troop of howler monkeys yesterday evening and this morning we are going to take a better look. I’ve been in Central America for a while and the howlers are famous: it […]

Leaf-cutter ant

Leaf-cutter ants

Being in Central America I have seen some amazing animals: monkeys, slots, all kinds of birds in a big variety of colours, including my favorite hummingbird. But one of the coolest animals I’ve seen, was one of the smallest: leaf-cutter ants. On some of the hikes I did – like the volcano climbing on Ometepe […]

Happy little kid doing AcroYoga

The little kid in me

The little kid in me is happy. Very, very happy. It’s pretty often happy. As long as it is allowed to play, it’s happy and lately it’s playing a lot: doing AcroYoga. Yesterday was just another day in Paradise. Although Paradise was no longer Central America, but this time Amsterdam. But there was a little […]

AcroYoga community Granada

Acro yoga community Granada

Wherever I look there are acro yogis, hanging on each other’s feet, hanging upside down, standing on hands, flying through the air. The dojo is packed. There is totally no room anymore to squeeze another pair of acro yogis in. Last night this room was full as well: with sleeping people. The evening before it […]

Living the life I dreamed of

My alarm goes off, and again, and again, and again. My eyes don’t want to open. It’s 5.30 in the morning, that’s a pretty decent time to get up, but my body doesn’t want to. It’s tired of all the training of the last few weeks. I have acupuncture at 8 o’clock at PURE Spa, […]

Acro Yoga and Dance Party

I can’t believe it, but a week from now I’m leaving Central America and I’ll be on my way to the Netherlands. But before it’s that far, I’m going to have an Acro Yoga and Dance Party. I don’t really feel like going home. For me it feels more as a stop over to see […]

Climbing up Volcano Maderas

Climbing up Volcano Maderas

Volcanoes have something magical for me. Sleeping giants: beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Being in Central America I’m surrounded by them, so why not climb them? A few weeks ago Sally, Andrea, Nathan and me were on Ometepe, which has two volcanoes: Maderas and Concepcións. Concepcións was closed for climbing; too active, which left Maderas. So […]

nicaraguan sexual moral

The Nicaraguan sexual moral

Her shoulders are shocking. Tears are welling down her big, brown eyes. Frustration, anger, incomprehension; all emotions are raging through her head. Just a few minutes ago, she was walking down the street in Granada, when a guy suddenly grabbed her, started to touch her and tried to kiss her. Out of nothing. She screamed. […]

Climbing volcano Maderas

Climbing volcano Maderas

It’s only seven in the morning, but the sun burns down with full power; roasting my bare head. It’s going to be tough today. The guides warned us. This is not just a hike, this is climbing volcano Maderas; serious climbing, where we will have to use our hands and feet. And it’s going to […]

Suffering from indecisiveness

Suffering from indecisiveness

We have a plan. Well, maybe not so much a plan, more an idea. And Idea were to go, when to go. It sounds as something very simple, but for a traveller it can be a big thing. Sometimes we travellers are suffering from indecisiveness. For me there is a big difference between being on […]

Change of scenery

After four months at La Mariposa Spanish school & Eco-hotel, six movies and more than 50 photo assignments, it’s time for a change of scenery. Time for a little break. That break brings me back to Granada, the city that’s starting to play a major role in my time in Nicaragua. For some reason I […]

Nicaraguan coffee with a German taste

Nicaraguan coffee with a German taste

Red beans, green beans, black beans. Three meters long, one meter wide, a centimeter of five thick: beans wherever I look. This is the harvest of the last few days: Nicaraguan coffee, with a German taste.   I love the smell of coffee, my intestines don’t like the taste of it though. So I keep […]

Chocoyero Natural Reserve

The clock is telling us that it’s almost five in the afternoon. We wait patiently in front of the waterfall.
