The Scene: Alcohol and tears

Alcohol and tears

With a wodka-coke in my hand I look at the photo in front of me. The photo on my laptop. A black photo with a white line around it. You normally get them in a white envolop with a black border. No good. The men on the photo smiles at me. A mysterious smile. One of his last ones. I just found out. I was on the road, missed the news. I raise my glass at him: ‘Thank you for all those beautiful moments and memories’. I take a sip and put the volume of my laptop up.

Tonight I got drunk and what I saw
I saw no woman gets what she deserves
Seeing takes a second, the memory will stay for ever
Tonight I got drunk and saw

Blue, blue, blue
I return to you
Blue, blue, blue
Yeah, blue

I just got drunk and realised
That I never give you what you deserve
I am just another guy who Always looks forward and never beside him
Tonight I looked and saw

Blue, blue, blue
I return to you
blue, blue, blue
yeah, blue

Because seeing takes one second
But the memory stays for ever
Blue

I’m coming to you, here I am
Love, I’m giving myself to you
Blue

I have no clue how often I have sung this song. The Dutch lyrics that is. Not my silly English translation. I don’t think I’ve ever sang it sober. There was always alcohol in involved. Lots of alcohol I don’t really drink anymore, but tonight I had to. This man, his band The Scene, man…. what a memories.

We use to go out with a group of six to eight friends. Most of us liked the same bands. The same Dutch bands: De Dijk, Trockener Kecks and The Scene. The Trockener Kecks made little stories, the lyrics of De Dijk were more ‘open’. The Scene was pure poetry for us. We went to all local festivals they played at. Screaming, shooting, singing. Well, singing our way. Our favorit song? Blauw (Blue).

Being drunk in Dutch is called: blue as a ball. And whenever we were as blue as a ball we would sing this song. No matter where we were, no matter what time of the night. I can still see me and Berny walking (trying to) from the pub to the camping in a little place called Renesse. I think it was a five kilometer walk. The way we wandered probably seven. We didn’t spoke a word. We just sung: Blue, blue, blue…. euhhhhh no clue, blue!

I take another sip of my wodk and listen to The Lau. He just started on a new song. Alcohol and tears….
